This course will consider the development of English in the period 1100-1500 - so-called Middle English. Representative texts will be used to illustrate the linguistic characteristics of the language in this period.
The course will also deal with the emergence of Middle English in the 12th century as well as the rise of a standard written language in the 14th and 15th centuries and the implications for the later development of the language.
It is recommended that course participants are attending the lecture series An Introduction to the History of English, or have attended in a previous semester.
Literature Course material including text extracts and grammatical material will be placed on Moodle.
