Description Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

The seminar focuses on an investigation of various linguistic changes in the history of English based on a variety of theoretical approaches and empirical methods. We will e.g. explore how certain changes in the history of English may be approached from a generative linguistic perspective or how they can be watched by applying corpus studies. Special attention will be given to approaches to grammaticalization and lexicalization as well as to pragmatic inferences in semantic change. Based on students interests, we will look at discourse-based case studies , sociohistorical research and historical-pragmatic analyses. Finally, we will look at how theories of language change may incorporate psycholinguistic perspectives and which role standardization and codification, regional variation and language contact may have played in the history of English.
