This seminar will address the issue of teaching and assessing speaking in the EFL classroom. Participants will learn how to design speaking tasks and materials and will also develop their competence for assessing FL learners speaking skills in an oral exam. As this course is linked to the course "Assessing interactional skills" (Tuesday 12-14) in linguistics, participants are highly recommended to sign up for both courses. While this course provides students with the relevant pedagogic and methodological knowledge for the EFL classroom, the linguistics counterpart will provide the relevant knowledge on (oral) interaction and interactional skills. Participants in both courses will also work with video data from a school classroom.
*Please note that this class is running in parallel to Susanne Reinhardt's class on Assessing Interactional Competence (Tue, 12a.m.-2p.m.) and constitutes Part II of this two-seminar unit on the teaching and assessment of speaking skills. The unit is specifically aimed at teacher students; both classes will build on, and reference, each other in order to work towards the learning outcome. Consequently, all students interested in this class are advised to also attend Ms Reinhardt's seminar, where you will be provided with the relevant linguistic background.
