“Shamanism” and “shamans” are designations applied to socially recognized and significant practices and persons, focused on contacting spiritual beings in various areas of the globe. As an anthropologist Piers Vitebsky noticed, the “–ism” in “shamanism” is deeply problematic, as the practices and beliefs of shamans and people who go to them are difficult to systematize. One could even say that flexibility, fluctuation and change are the core features of traditional shamanism. In this seminar we will look at several studies of shamanic practices from those regions, where such specialists have been operating for centuries, as well at those concerning so–called neo-shamanic practices, developed as outcomes of Western fascination with things ancient and exotic, as well as with techniques that support “personal growth”.
