Description

Due to holidays the first meeting of this class will be October 28th.

How do you translate the word ”halakhah”? The various options that have been proposed point to the deeper question of how to understand the concept. In this course we shall draw on historical, philosophical, and theological perspectives to gain some insight into this key term in the Jewish religious tradition. Historical research investigates the origins, uses and developments of halakhah. Philosophical analysis, a more recent academic development, seeks to understand the nature of the discourse and practice of halakhah. Theological reflections engage in the interpretation of the religious experience of halakhah and its claim to meaningfulness.
