As many contemporary issues exceed the boundaries of nation-states, international institutions are of pivotal importance in addressing these problems. A multitude of international institutions address global cooperation problems and thus they deserve analytical attention. To introduce students to the analysis of international institutions, the seminar proceeds in three steps: Firstly, we will introduce and discuss theoretical approaches towards international institutions. Subsequently, we will focus on major international institutions such as the World Trade Organization, the Climate Change Regime, and the UN Security Council and study their design, policies and challenges ahead. Finally, we will take a look at the role of NGOs and the question, to what extent governance through international institutions suffers from a democratic deficit.
