Data and evidence play an increasingly important role in the policy world. Across sectors, understanding how quantitative evidence is produced and how it can be interpreted is a skill that is in high demand. This course is for students interested in applying basic quantitative research skills or for those that want to explore an existing research idea. The focus is on ‘learning by doing’ using practical examples, in-class application of methods and an interactive work environment. Students will collect hands-on experience 1) developing a research question, 2) collecting their own mini survey, 3) analyzing and visualizing data as well as 4) learning how to write an academic paper. The seminar will help students to develop an appreciation of the potential and limitations of survey-based research.
