Please follow the "comment" link above for more information on comments, course readings, course requirements and grading.

In addition to your enrolment in PULS, please also enrol in the Moodle course. I will let you know via Moodle how the seminar will proceed (online or offline). At the moment, I am planning an online seminar. More up-to-date information will be available on Moodle.

Contemporary concepts of relational autonomy arose as a consequence of the feminist critique of traditional concepts such as proposed by John Rawls or Immanuel Kant. Social relations and their causal or constitute nature for autonomy are at the center of these new concepts. In the seminar we will discuss the nature of these social relations. Is it, for instance, necessary to live in a ”right” social environment to be autonomous? Or is it sufficient that each person, regardless of their social position, can be autonomous: the financially self-sufficient person as well as the parent, who takes care of young children. The question of external and internal conditions and the normative content of different desires will be discussed as well as possible threats to autonomy, such as oppressive socialization and adaptive preference formation. We will discuss works from Natalie Stoljar, Catriona Mackenzie, Marina Oshana, John Christman and Ann Cudd. The seminar will be held in English. All students are welcome! If you are unsure about your English-language skills, please contact me via Email.
