On Phases, Moves and Islands

The colloquium wants to give an alternative approach to Displacement Theories which ever since John ("Haj") Rosss Ph.D. seminal work Infinite Syntax (1967/1987) has been discussed in the field of Generative Syntax Theory. We will introduce into the Phase-Theory (Chomsky 1999, 2001 forthcoming) under the Aspect of a Theory of Radical Minimalism and we will try to show that any kind of restrictions are controlled by two major Principles of UG, namely Phase Impenetrability Condition Constraint and Merge-Over-Move Constraint as shown in the newest book Kosta (2020).
Students who attend are asked to know fundamentals of Generative Syntax Theory (Lectures on Government and Binding 1981, Minimalist Program 1995passim) and/or be able to work hard to access it within a short time.
Most of the work will be done in the seminar in small laboratories concerned with the following topics of Displacement:
1. NP-Movement
2. wh-Movement
3. Scrambling
4. Focus Movement and Topicalization
5. Freezing and Anti-Freezing Effects

The working language will be alternatively English and German, the languages we are analyzing will be any language which knows syntactic movement.
