The course is designed to provide a musical survey of the minor Holy Days and Fast Days of the Jewish calendar. The chants will follow both German and Eastern European traditions as needed. In addition, ed songs for various occasions will be studied, mostly in Hebrew, but some in Yiddish.
1. General Introduction: The musical calendar of minor Holy Days and Fast Days
• A survey of the special days of celebration and days of mourning
• The weekday Nusach as the musical basis for all of the special days
• Joyful, penitential and mournful liturgies
2. The Liturgy of Selichot
• The thirteen attributes of God: El Melech Yoshev and its chants
• Common Piyutim for all Selichot and their chants
3. Prayers for minor fast days
• Taanit Tzibbur: General public fasts, their prayers and chants
• Three fast days in commemoration of the Siege of Jerusalem
• Taanit Esther: The fast before Purim
4. Tisha bAv and its liturgy
• Review of Eicha trope and special chants for the Book of Lamentation
• Kinnot (Laments) for the evening and morning prayers
5. Chanukah
• Lighting the Chanukah candles, the ceremony and its chants

Some lessons will take up one class-session or more while others will be shorter.
