This seminar provides a structural linguistic and cognitive/variationist sociolinguistic perspective to English as spoken by the black population in South Africa. It will approach Black South African English (BSAE) as a heterogeneous variety that varies depending on the (African) mother tongues and the varying degrees of competence of its speakers. The seminar will focus on structural levels of the linguistic system (phonology, morpho-syntax, lexicon, pragmatics) as well as on complex issues of social, regional and cultural variation patterns and language contact.
Please note: This seminar will be taught synchronously via Zoom every week.
