Writers/artists are known to be particularly alert to the problems of cultural diversity and cultural contact. We want to investigate into (critical) representations of British/European (cultural) imperialism in a number of exemplary texts set mostly in non-European parts of the world and discuss their ambiguities between innovative, subversive potentials and mainstream affirmative undercurrents. We will consider the controversial readings of these texts from a postcolonial perspective that carefully historicises the views in order to show the colonial Other as political, socio-economical and cultural concepts and practice. This will include discussion of concepts of cultural mobility and cultural contact as well as a focus on the formation of a cultural Other inside a national culture.

This course will be a hybrid online seminar with synchronous and asynchronous phases. The online session with life meetings in a forthnightly rhythm. This will require you (!) to be online for a Zoom meeting during course times every 2 weeks! You should therefore make sure that you reserve the regular seminar slot for this course.

Leistungsnachweis Testat requirement vary with study programmes. Basically 20 min presentation during the term & 1 page thesis statement on another topic.
