The scholarly analysis of film as a medium (of creative expression, commercial practice, mass entertainment, political intervention—and more) engages broadly with two distinct sorts of questions: (1) what textual core/boundary constitutes the object of film analysis and (2) what set of interpretive activities make up the subjective dimensions of this field? This course aims to introduce you to different ways of interpreting films, by engaging with key theoretical texts and exercises in practical analyses of a broad range of cinematic texts from around the globe.

Bemerkung

Dear students,

Hello, and thanks for your interest in my course.

I am located in Hyderabad (India). The PULSE/Moodle digital platforms as well as some of the procedures regarding student registrations are still quite new to me!

I would like to inform you that I shall begin my online interactions/sessions with you from next week--that is, the week beginning from 9 November.

As you know from your other teachers by now, this semester's teaching will mostly happen online and be "asynchronous." As a teacher, I find this somewhat unfortunate; but then this enables you to tune in and proceed with your courses at your own pace and convenience. As with most of your other courses, my sessions with you will involve a combination of (a) assigned readings with simple but serious weekly tasks for you to complete, (b) short recorded videos or powerpoint lectures from me, (c) a few online video chats, and (d) three short written assignments for evaluation purposes. We will try and have at least one synchronous or "live" online session every month, at the time allotted in the timetable for this course: these sessions will give us the opportunity to discuss concepts, clarify doubts, share feedback, and hopefully get to know each other better.

The preliminary readings (and related prompts/tasks) for the first Module of this course will be made available on Moodle by this weekend. I have it all ready with me, and am in the process of figuring out how to upload the readings, video clips, tasks, etc. onto the Moodle platform!

I look forward to interesting sessions with you all from next week.

With best wishes,

Satish Poduval
