Scientific discoveries have changed the world. In this seminar, we will discuss some of the most important scientific and technical breakthroughs. Some like the theory of relativity or the Copernican revolution are well known, while others had a more subtle but nonetheless decisive influence on the history of mankind. Besides a discussion of those discoveries in their respective historical context, we will also focus on their lasting impact on culture and life. This is a joint seminar with the astronomer Professor Stephan Geier and the MA Astrophysics at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy. The seminar will be held in English. Each participant will be required to give a presentation together with a student from the other faculty, resulting in co-productions of historians and astrophysicists.
