Du Bois in 1906, “is but a local phase of a world problem.” If racial oppression could be said to be the by-product of global structures of domination, then the struggle against it must equally have global dimensions. As new work on “colored cosmopolitanisms” and “internationalisms” has showed, enacting global solidarities among the “dark peoples of the world,” among the colonized and the oppressed, remains until today one of the key features of African American political thought. This online course offers an introduction to this neglected political tradition. It will analyze the ways in which African Americans have conceived of, and sought to actualize, transnational solidarities with Africa (Ethiopia, Ghana, and Liberia), Asia (China, India, and Japan), and the Caribbean (Cuba and Haiti). This course will be taught by Eraldo Souza dos Santos.
