The course examines the development of masculinities in Eastern Europe from the end of the 19th century until the contemporary era. By focusing on masculinity, the seminar will enable the students to work with the gender theories in the context of men. We will start by getting to know the theories of masculinity (Conell, Kimmel etc) and will explore diverse spaces where masculinity could be analyzed. We will focus on ”military masculinity” during the World War I, on Soviet and post-Soviet masculinity, on Eastern European Jewish masculinity and homosocial spaces where men form relationships with other men. The geographical focus of the seminar includes contemporary Poland, Russia, Ukraine and former Austro-Hungarian Empire. We will look at the representation of masculinity in written and visual culture (memoirs, press, cinema, posters). The course will allows students to better understand the historical context in which contemporary Eastern European masculinities emerged.
