The course is designed to provide a musical survey of the three daily services: Shacharit, Minchah and Arvit (Maariv) and services on Shabbat, whose Nusach is related to the weekday services. The prayer-chants and melodies will be discussed with reference to the structure of the liturgy and the customs (Minhagim) that accompany it. The musical Nusach will follow both Eastern European and German traditions as needed. The course is divided into nine Lessons. Some lessons will take up one class-session or more while others will be shorter.
Lesson 1: The History and General Structure of the Daily Services
• The transformation of the daily services from the Temple cult to the Synagogue service
• The daily Shacharit service and its components
• The Minchah and Arvit services as counterparts of the Shacharit service
• Jacob Emdens view of the stages of prayer in Shacharit
• Modes and basic chants
Lesson 2: Benedictions and Study-Texts to Begin the Day
• Birkot Hashachar (morning benediction) and their chants
• Study texts within the Shacharit service: Chants and Study Modes
Lesson 3: Songs of Praise for Weekday Mornings
• Psukei Dezimra: Psalms, canticles and the use of Psalmody
• Eastern European chants for the weekday Psukei Dzimra
• The old regular German chants
• The festive German chants for ed psalms and canticles
Lesson 4: Shma and its Benedictions
• Musical anticipation and modal shift before Yishtabach
• The simple weekday form of the Ahavah Rabbah mode
• Textual and musical comparison of the Shma section on Shacharit and Arvit
Lesson 5: The Weekday Amidah
• The structure of the weekday Amidah of Shacharit and Minchah
• The musical structure of the first three benedictions

Lesson 6: Tachanun: Prayers of Supplication
