In this seminar students will engage with canonical novels and literary magazines produced in postcolonial Africa. In addition to interrogating the implications of their thematic, formal and stylistic characteristics, particular attention will be paid to how writers and editorial collectives combine textual and extra-textual practices to launch political interventions, which will be understood in an inclusive sense of the term. A guiding question for the seminar pertains to the kinds of communities postcolonial African literatures address, critique, imagine and bring into existence. Classes will take place online, with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous elements. The synchronous elements will take place during the announced course time.
