The course will consider how English originated as a language and how it developed from the earliest times to the present day. It will examine some of the more important linguistic aspects of the history of English, as evidenced by texts from the earliest (Anglo-Saxon) to the modern period, and the development of English in the colonies, in particular the United States. The historical background, in as far as it is relevant to the linguistic development, will also be provided.
This course is a repeat of the course offered in the previous winter semester, which was heavily oversubscribed. Students who failed to gain a place in the previous course will be given preference in this semester.
Literatur Course material will be made available on Moodle.
Leistungsnachweis Course evaluation will comprise a number of tasks to be submitted in the course of the semester together with a final online examination.
