In this class we will investigate histories of migration control and the development of the global border regime, in which some types of people can move relatively freely while others have almost no access to legitimate means of movement.
The focus of this course is in developing skills in the critical analysis of primary sources and in using archives.
Using these sources, we will investigate themes such as:
- the history of the passport and other identification documents
- the development of migration control and deportation bureaucracies
- the relationship between the development of migration controls and global histories of racism
- the history of different techniques through which people are sorted at the border according to nationality, race, gender, class, status, health, ability etc.
