This seminar focuses on various aspects of multilingualism in the family, starting with the concepts of bi- and multilingualism, language acquisition and family language policy, before moving to a guided analysis of spoken data.

Different approaches to the study of multilingualism in the family will be presented and analyzed, individually and in groups, and discussed in class. Audio and video data will be used to foster active participation and discussion of the theoretical approaches presented during the seminar.

Rules and regulations

-          Successful completion of this course is worth 2 LP, 3 LP or 6 LP, according to the student’s Studienordnung. Each LP corresponds to around 30 hours of work for the course.

-          If you expect to miss a class for a good reason, please let your lecturer know as soon as possible.

-          Assignments must be completed on the due date. Let your lecturer know beforehand if you think you cannot make a deadline. Do not miss a class because you have not finished an assignment.

-          Group discussions are very important. Articulating ideas in class gives you an opportunity to make fruitful exchanges with both the lecturer and your peers, as well as to develop critical thinking towards the object of discussion. Participating in class is highly recommended.

 

The final grade for this course will be based upon two components:

  1. Oral presentation and/or paper (according to the student’s study regulation – Studienordnung). The topic of the presentation and/or paper will be defined upon discussion with the lecturer.
  2. Continuous assessment based on completion of homework/participation in group discussions/activities.
