International Institutions - Einzelansicht

As many contemporary issues exceed the boundaries of nation-states, international institutions are of pivotal importance in addressing these problems. A multitude of international institutions address global cooperation problems and thus they deserve attention. To introduce you to the analysis of international institutions, the seminar proceeds in three steps: Firstly, we will introduce and discuss key concepts towards international institutions. Subsequently, we will focus on major international institutions such as the World Bank, the Climate Change Regime, and the UN Security Council and study their design, policies and challenges ahead. Finally, we will look at the populist backlash against international institutions and the question, to what extent governance through international institutions suffers from a democratic deficit.

This class is at advanced BA level (Vertiefungsseminar Internationale Politik), i.e. we focus on various aspects of research on international institutions. The seminar also offers opportunity to obtain feedback from the lecturer and space for exchange in groups. Interest in the subfield International Relations is required. Successful attendance of the introductory lecture is highly recommended. The course is designed to develop student competencies, i.e. we will focus on acquiring useful skills and competencies for students of political science, which will aid you in the preparation of term papers and your Bachelor thesis.

The event takes place in person in a synchronous format. Due to the strictly limited seating capacity in the seminar room, this seminar only can accomodate up to 30 students. More information will be sent to registered participants one week ahead of the class via email.

The course requirements consist of bi-weekly (group)assignments and a final paper of 3.000 - 4.000 words. Please upload your final paper until 31 March 2022 as one pdf-file in Moodle.
