In this course, we will examine together the main verses dealing with Shabbat in the Bible. In light of these basic Biblical texts, we will examine later how these verses were practically understood in Second Temple literature and in the Hellenistic Jewish world. We will investigate the main controversies concerning the nature of the Sabbath during this period. From there we will move on to reading the literature dealing with the Sabbath in the Mishnaic period and the developments of the Sabbath laws in the in Talmudic literature.The course will be conducted in English, accompanied by Hebrew texts.

The reading materials will be given to the students through Moodle in accordance with the level of the students in Hebrew and Aramaic and his ability to advance with them in the materials of the course.
Active participation in discussions, each student is occasionally required to prepare reading material in Hebrew and Aramaic from the sources and explain it in order to open the class discussion. At the end of the course, students are required to write a concluding paper.
