In this course students will engage with the works of canonical representatives of the Anglophone black radical tradition who have engaged with the Berlin-Brandenburg region in their lives and writing, such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Audre Lorde and Angela Davis. An important question guiding our discussion will be their respective criticisms of German coloniality and their commitment to the creation of decolonial forms of community. By experimenting with mapping as an alternative way of reading and writing, we will collectively draw a decolonial map of Berlin that seeks to locate this region in the entangled global histories of Panafricanism, Third Worldism and Black feminism. This work will take place in close conversation with current activist and scholarly work in Potsdam and Berlin around the memorialisation of German colonial history.
