This course provides an overview of studies investigating the representation and processing of complex words in the human brain. We will first examine knowledge and use of morphology in different kinds of special populations focusing on people with acquired brain disorders (aphasia) and people with neuro-degenerative diseases (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s). We will then discuss results from studies using electrophysiological and brain-imaging studies on healthy monolingual and multilingual individuals. Empirical findings will be evaluated from a linguistic perspective, focusing on how evidence from brain studies on language bears on notions and concepts of the theory of language.
