Salonika – die Hauptstadt der osmanischen Juden - Einzelansicht

Nach ihrer Vertreibung von der Iberischen Halbinsel fanden viele der in alle Ecken des Mittelmeerraums geflüchteten Juden ihr neues Zuhause in den ehemaligen byzantinischen Gebieten, die kürzlich von den Osmanen erobert waren. Die nordgriechische Stadt Salonika (Thessaloniki) wurde bald ein wichtiges Zentrum der sephardischen Diaspora und Sitz einer der größten jüdischen Gemeinden des Osmanischen Reichs. Dieses Seminar stellt sowohl Salonikas jüdische Geschichte, als auch die Rolle der Stadt als jüdischen Erinnerungsort dar. Die Schwerpunkte liegen auf der sozialen, kulturellen, religiösen und wirtschaftlichen Geschichte der jüdischen Gemeinde zwischen dem späten 15. Jahrhundert und dem Holocaust.

After their expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula, many of the Sephardic Jews, seeking new homes all around the Mediterranean area and beyond, found refuge in the formerly Byzantine territories newly conquered by the Ottomans. The city of Salonica (Thessaloniki) in Northern Greece soon became a major centre of the Sephardic diaspora and a seat of one of the most important Jewish communities in the Ottoman Empire. This course will address the history of Salonica’s Jewish population and the city’s place in the Jewish historical consciousness and self-understanding, exploring its social, cultural, religious and economic life from the late 15th century until the Jewish community’s destruction in the Holocaust.
