We find various stories in the Tanakh which tell of the foundation of something important: temples, kingship, a community, and much else. These narratives have multiple functions. Such stories obviously explain what the founded institution is, but, moreover, the point is often to legitimize it. Whether the institution is new or surprising, or perhaps runs counter to tradition, some explanation is offered. This course shall focus on several examples of foundation stories in the Hebrew Bible/Tanakh, and contextualize them with the help of secondary literature on the phenomenon in the Tanakh (and in the ancient world). Finally, we will explore some broader historical questions, and reflect on the theological dimensions of such narratives.

Voraussetzungen

The course will be taught in English. The texts will be studied in English and Hebrew. This course is partially based on lectures and therefore attendance and note taking is crucial. Students are expected to participate in class discussions based on the reading assignments. There will be some brief writing exercises and presentations. A five-page essay based on the course is due shortly after the last meeting.

Leistungsnachweis

The course will introduce the student to various approaches common in the study of the Hebrew Bible/Tanakh and history of religions. The student will learn to read the Hebrew Bible through a critical lens, and to ask questions about the historicity of the narratives. The discourse of the Hebrew Bible is a sophisticated and artistic instrument in the hand of authors with great interest in political arguments, and this aspect is often less well-known and recognized outside of the academic world.
