This course has two blocks. In the first block students practice the art of a brief structured speech, based on one sentence, thus introducing them to the core aspects of a sermon/Drashah. This practical exercise has two goals: students firstly get to know the formal rhetoric structure of a sermon and its elaboration, and secondly become familiar with typical characteristics of a sermon/Drashah. In the following group discussion, we reflect together the concepts as developed by students. Visiting two synagogues and reflecting together afterwards on the sermons preached will increase our appreciation to this particular kind of ‘open artistic communication’ (Umberto Eco). In the second block, we will systematically explore the road from Parashah to Drashah. We will work in pairs and small groups, thus enabling all students to get to know and actively use the tools for an effective Drashah.
