It is the Hebrew Bible and not the rabbinic literature which receives the most attention in the philosophical writings of Jewish philosophers of the early twentieth century in Western Europe. In the central philosophical-religious writings of Hermann Cohen, Leo Baeck, and Franz Rosenzweig, the preference of the Hebrew Bible over rabbinic literature is an empirical fact. Rabbinic Literature gained prominence in the second half of the twentieth century, exemplified in Emmanuel Levinas' writings. This seminar deals with the Status of the Scriptures in the philosophical method of several influential Jewish thinkers. We will discuss what scripture and narratives are most commonly used (e.g. the Hebrew Bible, prophetic literature, rabbinic literature, the Talmud, the Aggada, and liturgical and halakhic texts) according to the context in which they appear. Are the Scriptures an essential part, or are they peripheral to the philosophical methods?
