You want to learn more on Earth surface processes (aka Geomorphology)? You are wondering what is environmental seismology? This course is for you! The course aim is to introduce you to environmental seismology and how this technique can be used to gain knowledge on a variety of geomorphic processes (rockfall, landslide, river, glacier, etc.).
During this class, you will learn how to process seismic data to obtain exploitable plots, and you will gain broad knowledge on geomorphic processes. By the end of the class you will be able to use environmental seismology to discuss and offer interpretation on a variety of geomorphic processes.
Our aim with this class is to offer you a robust knowledge base for you to refer to in your future studies/internships. By the end of the class you will also be able to process, plot and offer an interpretation on any environmental seismic data.
The course will be a combination of lectures and workshops on the computer. The assessment will be a project where you will be given a set of seismic data and will have to process it and discuss on what it shows. Do not worry! A number of hours will be specially dedicated to project help.
We are three young researchers teaching this class (Anne Voigtländer, Sophie Lagarde and Luc Illien) and we are super motivated. You are not sure you want to follow this class? Come to our first class to feel the power of environmental seismology! We will show you all the possibilities offered by environmental seismology during a nice introduction.
Prerequisites:
You want to learn more on Earth surface processes.
You are fine with the course language being English.
Ideally, you have some very basic knowledge on coding (what is a “for” loop, a “if” statement, etc.).
You do NOT need to have a background in physics.
