The seminar course is intended to discuss different theories about language change based on different approaches to language. The theories will be discussed in combination with particular cases of change in the history of English. Beginning with the Neogrammarians, who were interested in physical and psychological factors of language change, we will then proceed with theories that are based on a structuralist view, on generative linguistics and on sociolinguistic approaches to language. The lecture will cover more general theories, such as Invisible Hand explanations, as well as more specific theories referring to changes on the individual levels of the language. References are for instance made to markedness, optimality theory, grammaticalization, and language contact, including pidginization and creolization theories.
