This course will introduce students to critical conversations in the field of digital humanities, seen through the perspective of postcolonial Indian poetry in English. In this course students will read foundational texts (essays and articles) that discuss questions related to knowledge-production, postcolonial literature, and the formation of archives in the age of digitisation and digital humanities. Alongside this, the class will also read a selection of Indian poems/zine issues in each class. We will use material from three zines: Vrishchik, Quest, and City Lights Journal. Basic data visualisation techniques will be explored in the course of this class. However, no prior knowledge of data visualisation or programming is required to enrol in this class.
At the end of the course, students will be expected to ”curate” a postcolonial ”archive” and write a critical introduction for their selection or they will be expected to write a short research paper or response paper on one of the topics discussed in the course.
For questions, please send an email at: priyam.goswami.choudhury@uni-potsdam.de.
Students may familiarise themselves by looking at the archives of Vrishchik at the Asia Art Archive website. Reading material will be made available on Moodle.
At least one week in the course will be dedicated to a ”research trip” to a space that archives zines.
Credits can be acquired by writing a response paper (1000-1500 words) for 3 ECTS or by writing a research paper (2000-2500 words) for 6 ECTS at the end of the semester.
