This course deals with the Oceania exhibition in the newly opened Berlin Humboldt Forum. It will have to address some of the institutional history of Berlin's new mega museum, as well as the more general challenges of ethnographic 'collections' from a postcolonial perspective. First and foremost, however, this class seeks to find ways of telling the complex stories behind select 'objects' on display in Berlin (and thus to do something that the museum largely fails to do). After a phase of lectures and collective reading, students in this class will therefore pursue independent small group research projects on an 'object' of their choice, and present their research toward the end of the semester.
all readings will be provided online via moodle.
