Biometric technologies have become the global standard operating procedure for regulating the entry and exit flows in most of the world’s countries. Also, in European Union migration management, ”smart borders” based on biometric technology have become the leading border technology to manage borders, citizenship and national security. Biometric data collection efforts have a long history: they were invented during the age of European imperialism, where they were born in a matrix intersected by colonial rule, biological racism, and the suppression of anti-colonial resistance. In this seminar, we will take a Cultural Studies informed approach to biometric technologies and scrutinize biometrics’ history including the relationship to the body that biometrics presupposes.
If the pandemic situation allows it, this will be an on-site seminar with no hybrid option. Please refrain from inquiring via email about the latest status, I will do my best to provide information in due time.
