Kommentar

In this course we will analyze different connections between Roman imperial politics and the Christian church from the middle of the 4th century to the beginning of the 5th century. We will review some of the most famous encounters and disputes between emperors and bishops in their struggle for power. We will analyze the new role of the empresses in the new Christian context and the importance of their trips to the Holy Land. We will examine the Christianization of late Roman cities and the development of monasticism as a new social order, and we will try to understand the political importance of some of the most important heresies of the time. All of this will be supported by written and visual sources.
