Labour and Education Economics - Einzelansicht

NOTE: Master of Economics students need to take both the lecture and the seminar to complete the module.

EPQM students: We recommend taking the lecture jointly with the seminar.

The lecture will be in the first half of the semester (2 lectures in a block on Tuesday mornings).

The mode of examination is a written exam.

This course provides and introduction to the economic analysis (both theoretical and empirical) of labour markets and the investment in and provision of education.

This lecture (Vorlesung) is supposed to be taken jointly with the seminar of the same name: the lecture will run for the first half of the semester (weekly sessions of 2 lectures in a block) and the seminar will run for the second half of the semester (again, weekly sessions of 2 blocked seminars).

The lecture is based on the following textbook:

• Labor economics by Andre Zylberberg, Pierre Cahuc, and Stephane Carcillo.
• In addition to weekly assigned (paper) readings

With respect to Labour Economics, we will cover the following topics:

• Labour Supply
• Labour Demand
• Discrimination
• Globalization, Employment and Inequality

With respect to Education Economics, we will cover the following topics:

• Human capital theory
• Returns to education (micro and macro)
• Early interventions
• Education production function
• Schooling policies (e.g. tracking, class size)
• Higher Education

The mode of examination is a written exam.
