Labour and Education Economics - Einzelansicht

NOTE: Master of Economics students need to take both the lecture and the seminar to complete the module.

EPQM students: We recommend taking the lecture jointly with the seminar.

The seminar will be in the second half of the semester in the same time slot as the lecture.

The mode of examination is an in-class presentation of an empirical paper and a term paper (on an empirical topic in labour or education economics) to be handed in at the end of the semester.

This seminar covers the same topics as the lecture of the same name but focuses on cutting-edge empirical researchin labour and education economics. The seminar runs for the second half of the semester, while the lecture runs for the first half of the semester. These two modules (lecture and seminar) are supposed to be taken together.

With respect to Labour Economics, we will cover the following topics:

• Labour Supply
• Labour Demand
• Discrimination
• Globalization, Employment and Inequality

With respect to Education Economics, we will cover the following topics:

• Human capital theory
• Returns to education (micro and macro)
• Early interventions
• Education production function
• Schooling policies (e.g. tracking, class size)
• Higher Education

Rather than lectures, the sessions will be primarily based on student presentations and (guided) in-class discussions.
