The central focus will be on the trauma(ta) of World War I & its repercussions in the arts. The course is designed as an investigation to aesthetic (and socio-cultural) aspects of British literature and arts of the early 20th century.
We want to investigate into (critical) representations of aspects social and cultural experience during the first decades of the 20th century in a number of exemplary texts and discuss their innovative potentials and ambiguities.
Trigger warning: There are ocassionally very explicit, violent descriptions of extreme brutal war violence. I advise against taking this course if you feel unable to take film sequences or text passages on these grounds. This violence is part of modern war and such a course has to face its representation academically as we face war's atrocities.
This will be a „Blended Learning” course with primarily synchronous classroom (or occasional online) sessions alternating with asynchronous phases. Hybrid classroom sessions are possible if circumstances should ask for it.
