Family is a core institution in every society, essential for integrating individuals into our social world. This course introduces various topics in the sociology of family. We will begin by asking broad questions, such as what constitutes a family, and how families are defined across different spheres. We will take both a micro and macro perspective. On the one hand, we will explore different theories that explain behaviors and dynamics within families. On the other hand, we will study families as a unit within society. We will consider family diversity and demographic changes, how people transition between different living arrangements, and how some transitions relate to different social risks. Finally, we will examine the role of family in different societies and policy constellations. Throughout the seminar, we will discuss classical texts alongside contemporary research.
