The aim of this course is to provide students with general introduction to Jewish epigraphy of the Graeco-Roman age (ca. 161 BCE–325 CE). In contrast to the usual introductions, here the students will not be introduced to the typology of inscriptions, but rather as an indispensable auxiliary science of historiography. In each class, we deal with a general historical topic with the help of epigraphic sources. In this way, students acquire not only broad, but also in-depth knowledge of Jewish history, religion, and society in the Graeco-Roman period.Course objectivesTo understand and analyze:• The most important issues of Jewish history in the Roman period (ca. 161 BCE – 325 CE)• Some issues of Jewish religion in the Second Temple period, Roman and Rabbinic era• Challenges of the Jewish diaspora in pagan environment in the Roman EmpireTo develop skills:• Reading and processing published Jewish inscriptions written in Hebrew and Greek• Analysing the content of historical texts and putting them into a wider context• Ability to research and write essay on ancient Jewish topicsRecommended prior knowledge• Knowledge of the Greek alphabet• Knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet• Some knowledge of Latin
To complete the course, you will be required to write a 3-5 page essay, the requirements for which will be communicated before the start of class.
